THE ALPHABET DISTRICT
Portland’s Alphabet District earned its charming appellation from the alphabetical progression of its East-West streets (for example Davis, Everett, Flanders, Glisan, and Hoyt). It is located in Northwest Portland, close to the Pearl District and Downtown, as well as some of the city’s best shopping on NW 21st and NW 23rd, the latter areas overrun by boutiques, shops, and independent establishments. Although an estimate of its actual boundaries is rough, most people consider the Alphabet District to be hemmed in by 17th and 24th Streets in one direction and Burnside and Marshall in the other. Some widen the scope to include all parts of Northwest through which the alphabetical streets run. The properties range from large Victorian homes to Craftsman bungalows, brick apartment buildings and condos to walk-up townhomes. The area abounds with single-family homes in a variety of styles, perfect for couples or growing families.
Here, a visitor is likely to see the casually dressed employees of tech startups mingling with yogis on their way to the studio. Many of the city’s boutique massage therapists, healthcare professionals and natural health establishments can be found here, as well as upscale grocery stores, specialty shops and amazing eateries. Hiking types will appreciate the proximity of Portland’s beloved Forest Park, boasting miles of wilderness and trails. The Alphabet District is also notable for its historic value, which is why prices in the area are higher than average.
